Columbus man, 70, killed in crash

HELTONVILLE — A Columbus man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in eastern Lawrence County, just west of the Jackson County line.

Dave Lee Duncan, 70, died at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday.

A little more than an hour earlier, Duncan was driving northbound on State Road 446, about three miles southeast of Heltonville, when his vehicle went off the right side of the highway, according to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators were unable to find any evidence, such as skid marks, to indicate why Duncan’s vehicle left the road before it went down an embankment and struck two trees, the report states.

After being removed from the wreckage and placed in an ambulance, emergency medical technicians continued to administer life-saving measures to Duncan until their arrival at the hospital’s emergency room, the report states.

Duncan was a 1964 graduate of Columbus High School.

Survivors include his wife, Diana Lienhoop Duncan.
