Betty Geane Vinson, 90, of Columbus, died Saturday morning, February 25, 2017, in her home.

She was born April 19, 1926, in Jennings County to Osa Ora and Mattie J. Wilds. A graduate of Scipio High School, Betty was a cheerleader there from 1940-1944.

On Valentine’s Day, 1945, she met her future husband, Robert L. Vinson at the roller rink in Columbus. The couple married on May 31, 1947, in Vernon.

Betty was a hard working homemaker, a devoted and loving mother and a supportive wife. She had a passion for music and played the organ for many years. Being athletic, she enjoyed tennis through her 40s and 50s. In her 60s, she bowled on a local women’s league. She and Robert traveled extensively throughout the United States in her later years.

Betty was a member of First Baptist Church and did volunteer work at Eastside Community Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Vinson on Sept. 10, 2013; parents; sister, Mary Evelyn Roane; and brother, Herbert Wilds.

Survivors include her daughter, Loretta Vinson and son, Larry Vinson both of Columbus; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Betty’s funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th Street with Dr. Daniel M. Cash officiating. Burial will follow at Vernon Cemetery. Calling will be two hours priorto service time at the funeral home.
