Averill W. Thompson McClure, 101, of Columbus, went to Heaven at 8:56 a.m. Thursday, March 2, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Casey, Illinois on August 26, 1915, Averill was the daughter of the Reverend George and Lydia A. Connely Thompson.

Averill was a homemaker in her own home, enjoying cooking, gardening, sewing, her flowers, reading and crossword puzzles. She was a loving and dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother who was always helping family and friends and expressing her love with her contagious signature smile. Averill had a very deep relationship with the Lord from a very early age, always seeing the good in people and any situation. She played the piano for her father’s church from the age of seven. She was the oldest member of East Columbus United Methodist Church of Columbus where she taught Sunday school, sang in the Chancel Choir and was a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service.

Averill was married to Harry Daniel “Bill” McClure on April 25, 1937, in Fairview by her father in the parsonage of the church where he was pastoring. Bill preceded her in death on October 4, 2004. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister; and two brothers.

Surviving Averill are her daughters, Beverly Watson and Cynthia McClure of Columbus; grandchildren, Brent (Desiree) Watson, Brian Watson and Beth (Jeff) Whittington, all of Columbus; eight great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Averill’s funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2017, at East Columbus United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Aigner officiating. Burial will follow in Garland Brook Cemetery. Calling will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2017, at Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th Street and one hour prior to the service at the church.
