North Vernon man’s death believed to be drug overdose

NORTH VERNON — The cause of death for a man found under a bridge on North State Street is believed to be accidental drug overdose, North Vernon police said.

Police found the body of Erick Austin, 32, Scottsburg, under the bridge at 4:58 p.m. Tuesday. Police said the body had been there for several hours before it was reported to police.

Investigators are waiting for the results of toxicology reports before releasing an official cause of death, police said. But after talking with family members, the cause of death was suspected to be an accidental overdose, police said.

Syringes were found at the scene and packaging material commonly used with heroin and methamphetamine also was found with the man’s body, police said. Austin had been living in the North Vernon area for a few years, police said.
