Alice “Jeanine” Bertram Berkshire, 84, of Columbus, died at 11:25 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2017, at Silver Oaks Health Campus.

Born in North Vernon, Jeanine was the daughter of Charles and Mary Louise Miller Bertram. She married Dr. Shaffer Berkshire in 1953 in North Vernon and he preceded her in death in 2005. Jeanine was a 1953 graduate of the St. Vincent School of Nursing and worked as a registered nurse in the obstetrics medical field for many years at St. Francis and Columbus Regional Hospital. She was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Harrison Lake Garden Club, Registered Nurses Association, Psi Iota Sorority and The Sewing Club. Jeanine volunteered for Love Chapel, Columbus Regional Hospital and Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Jeanine is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dennis “Denny” Allen; her grandsons, Devin and Shane Medaris, both of Columbus; her sisters, Margie (Jim) Bott, Judy Powell, Sherry (Glen) Euler, all of Columbus and Rose Ann (George) Smith, Washington state; and her sister-in-law, Roslin Saylors, Indianapolis.

Preceding Jeanine in death were her parents; her husband; and her daughter, Marcia Berkshire.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church by Fr. Clem Davis. There will be a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the mass. In keeping with Jeanine’s wishes, cremation is planned with private inurnment in Garland Brook Cemetery.

Hathaway-Myers Chapel on Pearl Street is entrusted with arrangements for Jeanine.

In lieu of flowers, memorials for Jeanine may be directed to the Jennings County or the Bartholomew County libraries.
