Word of an advocate: Local man pens novel

Staff Reports

New author Mike Rossetti of Columbus has released his first novel, “A Fort in the Storm.”

The story centers on young Adam Durkin in the fictional town of Williams, Indiana, who lives an idyllic childhood until an unimaginable family tragedy triggers a string of events that land Durkin’s father in jail and Durkin in foster care. There, the young man meets Micah Sanders, the local newspaper editor and recently sworn-in Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).

CASAs are specially trained volunteers who speak for children in cases of neglect, abuse and other sensitive family situations. The volunteers work to ensure every child can thrive in a safe, loving and permanent home.

The bond between the CASA volunteer and his client forms quickly as Sanders works for the best possible outcome for Durkin. Rossetti formulated the story while working in a volunteer leadership role for the local Advocates for Children between 2010 and 2016. The agency represents Bartholomew, Jennings and Decatur counties. Rossetti served on the Advocates for Children board of directors, including two years as the organization’s president.

Rossetti, former advertising director at The Republic, mentioned that the book is not about a particular case, and is not based on any true cases. But he said it involves a scenario that certainly could happen.
