John Carmichael

Columbus

John Charles Carmichael, 68, of Columbus, passed away after a brief illness on March 14, 2017, at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. John was born on April 23, 1948, and was the son of Don and Corinne Carmichael. He married his wife, Sandy, in 1987, and they would have celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in April. John graduated from Columbus High School in 1966 and was a member of both the basketball and golf teams. He was a lifelong Columbus Bulldog supporter and always sat under the basket at all home games. John graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Tech University, where he played on both the basketball and golf teams. He was also a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and enjoyed playing in a garage band. John retired from the Delta Faucet Company in April of 2014 and continued to maintain a close relationship with his Delta family.

As a member of the Harrison Lake Country Club, he had a close knit group of golfers and card players for many years. The staff there said, “John impacted hearts and lives daily. He always took the time to be present with you and invest in his relationship with you. John loved HLCC, golf and people. He was in his sweet spot when he was with his family and friends at the club. He especially delighted in pouring into the lives of young golfers.” John served as assistant golf coach for the Columbus North Bulldogs for the past four years, where each player had a special place in his heart. He also served on the committees of the American Junior Golf Association, the Andy Critzer Memorial Golf Tournament and the First Tee. He attended Westside Community Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy; his children, Stacey (Will) Horn and Brandon (Leanne) Anderson; a sister, Jane Carmichael; several aunts; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. John was a loving and proud grandfather to Bailey, Landon and Logan Anderson and Zoey, Cooper and Anderson Horn. John spent countless hours attending and supporting all of their activities. He was also awaiting the birth of another grandson, Kingston Anderson, in a few weeks.

John was preceded in death by his mother and father. He will be greatly missed by so many of the lives he touched and by his loyal companion, Beau.

The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Westside Community Church with Dennis W. Aud officiating. Family and friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Westside Community Church. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Bull Dog Alumni Association, John Carmichael Endowment through the funeral home or mailed directly to John Carmichael Endowment, 1400 25th St., Columbus, Indiana 47201 or to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, 2626 East 17th St., Columbus, Indiana 47201.
