Flat Rock – Hawcreek kindergarten registration

The Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. will conduct kindergarten screening and registration next month for the 2017-18 school year.

Children must be 5 years old by Aug. 1 in order to be eligible to attend kindergarten this fall.

Parents should bring their child to the screening, which will take about 30 minutes. Parents also should bring the child’s birth certificate and immunization record to the event.

Screenings and registration will be conducted at the following times at Hope Elementary School:

  • April 12: 9 to 11 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
  • April 13: 9 to 11 a.m., 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m.

Local student wins National Young Artists competition

The 2016 winner of the John Philip Sousa National Young Artists Solo Competition will perform as a guest soloist with the U.S. Army Field Band in April.

Samuel Heichelbech, Columbus North High School senior, has earned the chance to show his solo clarinet skills as winner of the competition. He will perform Carl Maria von Weber’s Concertino for Clarinet, Op. 26 with band accompaniment at 3 p.m. April 9 at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas.

Heichelbech is the son of John and Jenny Heichelbech.

The John Philip Sousa NYASC is a national competition that identifies, recognizes and honors outstanding high school musicians who demonstrate a significantly high standard of excellence in performance. The winner gets the opportunity to perform as a soloist with a university or military band, and a $1,000 scholarship if they enter college as a music major.

Scholarships available to county students

Local high school seniors have four new scholarship opportunities for which they can apply.

Tri Kappa is offering three scholarships, each at $900, for students planning to seek a college degree. Tri Kappa is also offering an Abby Brinkman Memorial Scholarship for $1,300 for a high school senior planning to pursue a degree in the medical field.

Students should submit their applications, along with high school transcript, two letters of reference and an essay by April 13. Applications and further information can be found at school guidance offices or by emailing Carrie Beckort, Tri Kappa Scholarship Chair, at [email protected].

Children of current or former Tri Kappa members are not eligible.
