Stephen Foster Appleton, 77, of Shelbyville, formerly of Tipton and Columbus, Indiana, died at 11:54 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at Franciscan Health, Indianapolis. He was born on March 21, 1939, in Tipton to Merle L. and Ida-Florence (Pyke) Appleton. Stephen made his home in Tipton with his aunt and uncle, Herb and Mary (Pyke) Michel.

Stephen had worked at J.M.J. Vending Company, Kasco Manufacturing, Cork Liquors and WSVL radio station, as well as radio stations in Plainfield and Frankfort. He graduated from Tipton High School in 1957, and earned his BS and MS degrees from Butler University, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He was a member of First Christian Church in Shelbyville. Stephen served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves at Bakalar Air Force Base in Columbus, Indiana after receiving his basic military training at Lackland AFB in Texas.

Survivors include one daughter, Shannon (Scott) Trimnell, Indianapolis; one son, Shane Appleton, Indianapolis; three grandchildren, Andrew Appleton, Zander Appleton and Kyle Trimnell; and one step-sister, Jo-Ellen Geary, Lafayette.

Stephen’s funeral will be at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Morningstar presiding. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Tipton. Visitation will be from noon until the time of the service.
