Velma Mahaffey

Velma L. Mahaffey, 96, of Bloomington, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at her residence surrounded by her family. Velma was born November 20, 1920, in Greensburg, Indiana and was the daughter of Clem C. Nugent and Mintie (Young) Nugent.

Velma was a graduate of Jackson High School in Westport, Indiana and worked for several years at Indiana University in the Bursar and Transcription offices. She was a member of the Helpful Hannah’s Club and Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. She enjoyed baking, sewing, women’s bridge club, ladies bowling league and hosting family dinners during the holidays. She loved spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren, and traveling with her husband, Richard.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Belcher of Bloomington; grandchildren, Shannon Webb (Steven), Natalie Clark, Nicole Van Sant (David) and Megan Holtsclaw (Danny), all of Bloomington; great-grandchildren, Cooper Webb, Ty Webb, Haylee Clark, Hayden Clark, Hudson Clark, Dillon Van Sant, Dane Holtsclaw and Reid Holtsclaw, all of Bloomington; and sister-in-laws, Barbara Mahaffey Brown (Robert) of Columbus and Sybil Mahaffey of Hope.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Richard “Dick” Mahaffey; her mother and father; stepmother, Alta (Oldham) Nugent; daughter, Marsha Deckard; son-in-law, Chuck Belcher; and eight brothers and sisters.

Visitation for Velma will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St., Bloomington. Services will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday with Tom Ellsworth officiating. Entombment will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens.

Contributions in Velma’s name may be given to the American Cancer Society or IU Health Hospice.
