Brian’s picks -March 23

Make no mistake that Columbus Indiana Philharmonic music director David Bowden loves to see sizable audiences for the orchestra’s performances. But he has frequently said part of his mission is to encourage youth music education and to encourage as many people as possible to be music makers, not just listeners. The Philharmonic Youth Orchestra hits the right note on both counts. Its next concert is 4 p.m. April 2 at First Christian Church, 516 Fifth St. in Columbus. The performance of students in Grades 4 to 12 is free. Information: 812-376-2638 or thecip.org.

If you need more of a song in your heart, Columbus City Band’s spring concert is slated at 2 p.m. April 9 at The Commons, 300 Washington St. in Columbus. The band, under the leadership of Steve McGrew of Seymour, is a group of volunteer musicians, many of whom work as professionals with other groups and ensembles. Concerts are free.
