Bruno Milakovic

Bruno Charles Milakovic, 92, formerly of Columbus, died in Carmel at the Brookdale of Carmel.

Born May 26, 1924, in Hammond, he was the youngest of four sons and two daughters of Joseph and Sophia Unikar Milakovic. He graduated in ‘42 from Hammond High School. He then enlisted in the U. S. Army and completed his basic training at Ft. Hood, Texas. He served with a tank destroyer battalion and later a field artillery battalion in the European Theatre during WWII.

After his service, he enrolled and graduated in ’51 from Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in P.E. and biological sciences and, in ’54, a master’s degree in guidance. He taught and coached at several Indiana high schools before arriving at Columbus/Columbus North High School in 1957. At North, he was the department chairman of the Health, P.E. and Drivers Ed department until he retired in ’90. He was a long-time member of North Christian Church.

Bruno married Martha Ann Otto on Dec. 19, 1953. She preceded him in death in 2016. Bruno is survived by his children, Mikal Ann Meeks of Paris, Texas and Millicent Ann (Gregory) Mitchell of West Lafayette; two grandsons, Duncan and Ross Mitchell of West Lafayette; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

There will be a funeral service for Bruno at 1 p.m. Friday at Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th Street with Annette Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in Garland Brook Cemetery with military honors by the Bartholomew County Honor Guard. Calling will be one hour prior to the service.
