Lucas-sponsored firearm bill moves forward

The House Committee on Courts and Criminal Code recently voted unanimously for a bill sponsored by State Rep. Jim Lucas, R-Seymour, that would make the possession of a firearm by an illegal immigrant a Level 6 felony.

According to Lucas, there is currently no law in Indiana that addresses this situation. A Level 6 felony is the lowest level felony in the state, and it can carry a sentence of six to 30 months in prison and a fine up to $10,000.

“If a person is here illegally or unlawfully, they do not have the right to possess or carry a firearm,” Lucas said. “This bill would allow Indiana prosecutors to charge these law-breaking individuals with this felony.”

This bill now moves to the full House for further consideration. To learn more about Senate Bill 344, visit iga.in.gov.
