The date for Jennings County United Way’s “Day of Caring” event at Muscatatuck Park has been moved to April 8 because Easter falls on the third weekend of April this year.
“Day of Caring” will begin at 707 N. State St., North Vernon, and clean-up activities will take place at various sites throughout the park, according to the Jennings County United Way website.
A sign-in and social hour with donuts, juice and coffee is planned for 7 to 8 a.m. Work projects are planned for 8 a.m. until noon. A free cookout for volunteers begins at noon.
People can volunteer as individual residents or as members of teams sponsored by clubs, companies or other organizations.
Work to improve the park has been underway throughout the winter, but volunteers are still needed to prepare the park for a very busy summer.
Muscatatuck Park, near State Roads 3 and 7 between North Vernon and Vernon, became the fourth state park in Indiana in 1921, but in 1968 it was ceded back to Jennings County and was designated a county park, according to the county’s parks and recreation department website.
In recent years, the park has become known for its developed running and mountain bike trails, rock-climbing venues and camping sites. Caving, canoeing and kayaking activities are steadily improving in popularity.
