County district increases commercial disposal fees

Fees for disposing commercial yard waste at the Bartholomew County yard waste site are going up Saturday.

The 10 percent increase is the first for commercial yard waste since 2012, said Heather Siesel, director of the Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District.

The hike, approved Feb. 27, was done to bring the district’s prices in line with other counties across the state, Siesel said.

The district looked at five other counties — Porter, Howard, LaPorte, Warrick and Allen — that provide commercial yard waste services.

“Everyone’s higher than us for pretty much everything and we wanted to get in line with the industry,” Siesel said.

No concerns have been raised by commercial users about the fee increases. A 25 percent increase was imposed in 2012, Siesel said.

The county’s yard waste site is located behind the recycling center and city garage at 720 S. Mapleton St. The commercial yard waste program has been offered by the district since 1997.

Commercial haulers can bring their material from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Residential services

Siesel said residents can still drop off material free of charge from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. The district offers mulch and compost loading to all county residents at a cost of $10 from April to October on Fridays from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

Residents can also choose to load mulch or compost themselves at no cost, Siesel said.
