Pursuit leads to arrest of local man for felony

Columbus police arrested a local man after a pursuit that began at the intersection of U.S. 31 and Central Avenue.

Columbus police officer Robert Mitchell saw a red Honda Civic disregard a red traffic light at the intersection at 12:50 a.m. Monday, but when Mitchell attempted to stop the car, the driver refused to pull over, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Mitchell pursued the driver, later identified as Mitchel R. Wood, 26, 2632 Lombardy Court, at speeds up to 70 miles per hour, before Wood stopped in a parking lot on Nicholas Lane near Candlelight Drive, Harris said.

Wood was arrested on a charge of felony resisting law enforcement and was cited for disregarding an automatic traffic signal, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and speeding, Harris said.

Wood is being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $7,500 bond, jail officials said.
