Update with photos: 2 dead in wreck on Interstate 65

Two people died in one of two wrecks reported in the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 near the 48-mile marker this morning, police report.

The two were in a vehicle involved in a wreck that occurred in traffic backed up behind the first wreck, which involved two semitrailers, Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said.

The names of the deceased have not been released.

11 a.m. update

The southbound lanes of Interstate 65 at the 48-mile-marker have reopened after two early morning, police report.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the Indiana State Police is investigating the wrecks, one of which involved two semitrailers, and said he would release more information as soon as it becomes available.

Two wrecks have left the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 closed at the 48-mile-marker in the Seymour area, police report.

The first wreck, reported more than two hours ago, involved two semitrailers and led to slow going for motorists in the area, according to Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the Indiana State Police.

A second wreck, reported about an hour later, forced complete closure of the southbound lanes, Wheeles said.

He is advising motorists to use U.S. 31 as an alternate route.
