Columbus robotics team in state championship

A robotics team from Columbus is among 32 competing for the Indiana FIRST Robotics state championship Friday and Saturday at Huntington North High School, 450 McGahn St., Huntington.

GalacTech will compete in the free event, which is open to the public. Practice rounds begin at 8 a.m. Friday.

This year’s competition game is FIRST Steamworks, which invites two adventure clubs from an era when technology relied on steam power to prepare airships for a race. Robots will collect fuel represented by green balls, and retrieve and deliver gears to pilots. The robots then climb aboard the airships to assist pilots during the race.

Each match begins with a 15-second autonomous period in which the robots operate only on programmed instructions.

A live stream of the competition will be at indianafirst.org/.
