Norma Jean Bergsieker, 82, of Columbus, died at 12:40 p.m. April 12, 2017, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Norma was born April 18, 1934, in Fort Wayne, to James and Jeanette Brittin. She had one sister, Barbara Brittin Hontz. She married Harlan Bergsieker Jr. June 23, 1956, in Fort Wayne.

She graduated Central High School in Fort Wayne and earned a degree in elementary education from Ball State Teachers College. She completed a Master’s degree in education from Ball State University.

She began her teaching career with Seymour Schools, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jonesville and East Allen County Schools. In 1978, she became owner/director/lead teacher of Jack and Jill Preschool at Grace Lutheran Church. In 1990, Jack and Jill moved to East Columbus United Methodist Church. Norma taught there until 2003. Teaching young children was her passion.

She was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and a midweek church school teacher. She was a member of the Grace Women’s Guild and Prides of Fairlawn Home Economics Club.

Norma’s life revolved around spending time with her children and grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2017, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor John Armstrong officiating. Calling hours will be from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Jonesville.

Memorials may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church through the funeral home.

Survivors include her son, Ed (Shirley) Bergsieker of Columbus; daughters, Greta Bergsieker of Cicero and Gail (Andrew) Wurtz of Carmel; and grandchildren, Sarah (Frank Jamerson) Bergsieker, Rachel Bergsieker, Alexander Wurtz and Madeline Wurtz.
