Deputies find heroin after traffic stop on North U.S. 31

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a local man for possession of heroin after a traffic stop on north U.S. 31.

Shane Medaris, 29, 3222 Washington St., was arrested at 3:06 p.m. Tuesday after Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Bush saw Medaris’ white Honda change lanes without signaling on north U.S. 31 near Bear Lane, deputies said.

When the Honda reached Heflin Park Road, it again switched lanes without signaling and turned into a Marathon station, where Bush stopped the vehicle, deputies said.

When Bush checked Medaris’ license, he learned that Medaris had a suspended license with a prior conviction, deputies said.

K-9 Diesel walked around Medaris’ vehicle and alerted to the presence of narcotics at the driver’s side door, deputies said.

During the traffic stop, Medaris had appeared to be drinking from a cup, but inside the cup, Bush located a corner cut baggie containing a brown powdery substance, deputies said. Medaris told deputies that it was about a gram of heroin.
