Work to begin for rail installation

Work to replace rails at several intersections in Jackson County has begun and will be moving north toward Bartholomew County by the end of the week.

Andrea Janka, of Safety Services & Supply Inc., a company contracted by Louisville & Indiana Railroad and CSX Railroad to handle safety logistics for the work, said two railroad crossings across County Road 760E and County Road 1000N in Jackson County are being reconstructed this week. Both crossings are southwest of the Interstate 65 and State Road 11.

By this weekend, crews will be moving into the Jonesville area to reconstruct crossings on County Line Road and Poplar Street, Janka said.

All road closings at the railroad crossings will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for safety reasons, but the road will be open overnight, she said.

Motorists should be aware that until the crossings are finished, vehicles will be driving over railroad fill rock, which has the potential to damage vehicles if a motorist drives too fast over the crossings, she said.
