LCPL Jacky Ray Koenig Jr., 20, of North Vernon, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017, at 7:47 a.m. JST (6:47 p.m. EST on Saturday, April 8, 2017), at Marine Corps Base Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa, Japan.

Born September 27, 1996, in Bakersfield, California, Jacky was the son of Jack Koenig Sr. and Patricia Espinosa Koenig.

Jacky was a 2014 graduate of Jennings County High School and in 2015 joined the United States Marine Corps, was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, and then deployed to Camp Butler in Okinawa, Japan. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in North Vernon. During high school he was on the Jennings County track, cross country and wrestling teams.

Jacky enjoyed various sports but his love was track and field and cross country. He enjoyed weightlifting, where he was a member of the 1,000 pound club. He enjoyed cooking, participating in mud runs, and while in Japan, jungle warfare training and gym time.

Survivors include his parents, Jack and Patricia Koenig Sr. of North Vernon; sisters, Jana (Steve) Armstrong of Springville, LeeAnn (Zach) Chase of Bakersfield, California, Rhianna (Jeff Rowlett) Koenig of Madison, Sarah Ann (Bryan) Fox of Selma and MaryAnn (Josh) Myers of Plainwell, Michigan; grandparents, Alfred Espinosa of Bakersfield, California, and Lois Faye Koenig of North Vernon; five nephews and nieces and one great-nephew; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Ernestina Espinosa and Eugene “Duke” Koenig.

Funeral service will be conducted at noon on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at the First Baptist Church in North Vernon with the Rev. Ryan Goode and Father Jonathan Myers officiating. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 24, 2017, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon and from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery with full military graveside rites conducted by members of the United States Marine Corps.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Jacky Koenig Memorial Scholarship Fund that has been established with Jennings Community Foundation for Track & Field and Cross Country Athletes.
