Track meet to resume today

The Columbus East at Columbus North track and field meet was suspended because of lighting Thursday and will be resumed at 5 p.m. today.

The Bull Dogs lead the boys meet 20-3 after three events. Mitchell Burton won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 7 3/4 inches, Triston Perry took the 110-meter hurdles and North captured the 4×800 relay.

The girls meet is much closer. The Bull Dogs lead 22-19 after five events.

North’s wins have come from Jahna Smiley in the high jump (5-1), Maura VanDeventer in the 100 hurdles and from the 4×800 relay. East’s McKenna Downey won the pole vault (9-0), and Beyoncey Coleman-Turner took the shot put (32-7½).

Following those events, lightning appeared several times, causing the meet to be delayed for almost two hours. Athletes from both teams came back to the track to warm up around 7:45 p.m., but another sight of lighting a few minutes later caused the postponement.
