Morel hunters score big haul

It’s the time of year when many a hunter is looking for the elusive yet tasty morel mushroom.

Herbert and Virginia Wheeler, Columbus, found about 35 of the mushrooms on a recent hunting trip to property between Vallonia and Brownstown in Jackson County. She said the couple goes mushroom hunting every spring.

Morels tend to grow on the edge of forested areas, and Virginia Wheeler said the mushrooms the couple found were in the woods. They aren’t giving away the location, though.

And although it might be tempting to sell the morels, Virginia Wheeler said she and her husband have plans to fry them and eat them just as they are.

“I’m not sure we want anything else with them,” she said. “I might just have a mushroom sandwich.”
