William R. Gutknecht, 71, of Columbus, died at 1:28 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Mr. Gutknecht was born November 18, 1945, in Columbus, to Martin and Geneva Bright Gutknecht. He married Teresa Gray May 5, 1984.

Mr. Gutknecht was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, rising to the rank of Sergeant.

He retired from Cummins Engine Company after 32 years of service and was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

He was a good artist and his hobbies included fishing, shooting guns and collecting knives. He enjoyed time with family and riding the train.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 33 years, Teresa, and his children, William T. Gutknecht and Teresa N. Gutknecht (Jeremy Crismore), all of Columbus.

Mr. Gutknecht was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Richard Gutknecht.

The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Rev. Mark Teike officiating.

Family and friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until service time Tuesday.

Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Full military honors will be presented by the U.S. Air Force Ceremonial Unit and the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
