Flags half-staff today for late Marine

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb has directed that flags at state facilities in Jennings County be flown at half-staff today to honor Lance Cpl. Jacky Ray Koenig Jr., who died during training while stationed in Okinawa, Japan.

Holcomb requested that businesses and residents in Jennings County also lower their flags to half-staff from sunrise to sunset today, the day of Koenig’s funeral, to honor his service and devotion to duty.

Koenig died April 8 at Marine Corps Base Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa at age 20. He was a 2014 graduate of Jennings County High School who joined the Marines in 2015.

His parents, Jack Koenig Sr. and Patricia Espinosa Koenig, of North Vernon, are among the survivors.

The funeral for Lance Cpl. Koenig starts at noon today at First Baptist Church in North Vernon. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by members of the U.S. Marine Corps.
