Delmos L. Gates, 87, of Columbus, died at 4:16 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at his home.

Mr. Gates retired from Meadows Metal, Cummins Engine Company and Ventra. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he was baptized in 1938. A sports enthusiast, he enjoyed the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bears and IU basketball. Mr. Gates was a self-taught carpenter and he also enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an animal lover. He was loved by his family and will be missed.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street. Family and friends may call from noon to time of service Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Riley Hospital for Children.

Mr. Gates was born in Columbus, March 27, 1930, to Donald and Elizabeth Belle Coffman Gates. He married Mary Jane “Janie” Sullivan on Feb. 27, 1954.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years; his sons, Ronald L. Gates, Jeff A. Gates and Troy C. (Amy) Gates, all of Columbus; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Matt) Stancik, Matthew Gates, Shannon Douglas, Travis Gates, Christopher Gates and Bradley Gates; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Kenneth Spaugh of Columbus and Scott Spaugh of Lafeyette; and a sister, Nina (Jim) Meals of Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Gates; mother, Elizabeth Belle Spaugh; brothers, Donnie Gates, Artie and Wayne O’Haver; sisters, Patty Grant and Linda Wright; and a grandson, Jeffery “Jay” Gates.
