One State Road 58 bridge to open, another closes

One State Road 58 bridge in Bartholomew County is reopening to traffic soon, while another will close.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is completing construction of a bridge deck overlay on a State Road 58 bridge across the south fork of White Creek. The project, about 9 miles west of Interstate 65, is expected to be completed Monday.

When that work is done, the State Road 58 bridge over a branch of White Creek, about 8 miles west of the interstate near Waymansville, will close so it can be removed. Plans call for that structure in Jackson Township to be replaced by a 41-foot-long box beam bridge with 35 feet of clear roadway side to side.

The state’s contract allows the bridge to be closed up to 120 days. Detour signs will send westbound traffic via I-65, U.S. 50, State Road 11 and State Road 258. Eastbound traffic will detour via State Road 258, State Road 11 and I-65.

Traffic count on the bridge is 1,340 vehicles per day.

Milestone is the contractor for the $1.1 million bridge replacement, which also will include removal and replacement of the State Road 58 bridge over Buck Creek in Jackson County. That bridge is about 4 miles east of State Road 258 and work is tentatively scheduled to begin in mid-July.
