Canoe/kayak event on Muscatatuck River

The Friends of the Muscatatuck River Society (FMRS) will host two annual, public canoe and kayak events at Jennings County’s Muscatatuck Park next weekend.

The Wayne Durbin-Dan Shade-Kevin Jayne Rendezvous will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday. Admission to the rendezvous is free. Following the day on the river is a pitch-in dinner and a silent auction. The auction includes a canoe, and all proceeds benefit the park.

The Orio Bloomquist Memorial Race will begin at noon May 6 on the Muscatatuck River. It is open to the public but there is a fee for each person in the race. Prizes and awards will be given following the race.

“The race has been held every year for decades. It used to be called a canoe race, but last year we had more kayaks than canoes. Both events are really for anything in the canoe/kayak family,” FMRS volunteer Troy Jackson said. “Both days are really fun and you do not have to be an expert to participate in either event. In fact, many people show up and stand along the river just to watch the canoes and kayaks.”
