Andrew Luck is coming to Columbus.
The Indianapolis Colts quarterback will help Riley Children’s Hospital host a Change the Play camp June 10 at Columbus North High School for kids ages 5 to 13. The camp will focus on high-energy fitness and nutrition.
Organizers from Riley contacted North athletics director Jeff Hester and asked if he’d be interested in hosting a camp. Since the facility was open and available that day, he jumped at the opportunity.
“It’s going to be great for the whole community to be able to experience this camp, especially for the kids involved,” Hester said. “He’s obviously a great quarterback, but also a tremendous role model. When you have an opportunity as unique as this, you have to take it.”
Luck is coming off surgery on his right (throwing) shoulder in January. He is expected to be ready to play when the season begins in September.
The 2012 No. 1 overall pick out of Stanford had his best year in 2014, when he threw for a Colts single-season record 4,761 yards and 40 touchdowns in leading them to a berth in the AFC championship game.
Luck then endured an injury-plagued 2015 season, when he played in only seven games. Last year, he threw for 4,240 yards with 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
Hester said athletes from Indiana University may help with the camp, as well.
The camp will have two sessions — one from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and one from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Admission is free, but is limited to the first 250 registered children per session.
