JACKSON, Miss. — Police say a man was shot to death by someone who kicked in his front door and started shooting in Mississippi’s capital city.

Commander Tyree Jones says the break-in happened early Wednesday in the northwestern part of Jackson.

The victim, 30-year-old Fred Smith, was at home with his wife and another person at the time of the break-in. After being wounded, Smith went into the front yard and died.

Jones says the other person in the house shot at the fleeing suspect, but there’s no evidence the suspect was hit.

Jones says police are seeking the suspect, and they could not immediately confirm whether anything was taken from the house.

Smith was the 25th person killed in Jackson this year.
