Cabaret delivers Broadway, TV star Jane Lynch for Christmas

Former “Glee” TV star and Emmy winner Jane Lynch will present a Christmas Cabaret at The Commons show Dec. 7.

About half of an expected 450 tickets for “A Swingin’ Little Christmas” still are available beginning today, according to the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, which organizes the event. Cabaret subscribers got first shot at tickets a week before today’s public announcement.

The theme celebrates Lynch’s retro holiday album of the same name, with an evening of swing arrangements of Christmas classics and clever originals.

Accompanying Lynch on vocals will be Kate Flannery (“The Office”) and Tim Davis (“Glee”). The Tony Guerrero Quintet will accompany the trio.

Tickets are categorized into three tiers: celebrity for $75, starlet for $50, and co-star at $30. Celebrity guests will receive priority center stage seating and an invitation to a post-cabaret meet-and-greet with Lynch.

The Philharmonic hopes to have an all-table layout for seating at the 8 p.m. show, Philharmonic marketing director Katelyn Ice said. Normally, the local cabaret configuration includes rows of seats with no tables in the back.

The Lynch show is expected to be among the largest in the Cabaret at the Commons series.

Singer, actress and dancer Rumer Willis attracted the largest overflow Cabaret at The Commons crowd of 457 people to her show on July 21. Last year, Broadway and TV star Megan Hilty sold out her 400-seat Dec. 1 local Christmas cabaret in about 10 days, according to the Philharmonic.

“On an overall pop-culture basis, she (Lynch) may be more well-known than anyone else we’ve had so far,” Ice said. “But that kind of depends on what you watch.”

Local Broadway followers have tended to readily recognize high-profile Broadway stars. And big TV watchers have tended to readily recognize those with a solid resume with TV shows, Ice said.

Lynch, like many other local cabaret performers, boasts substantial experience in both TV and films, plus Broadway work since 2013.

Her six-season role on “Glee” as cold and ruthless cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester earned her both an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award.

Applauded for her witty one-liners, she also was host of the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. She has appeared on various television shows, including “Criminal Minds,” “Best in Show,” “Family Guy,” “Desperate Housewives,” “The Simpsons,” “3rd Rock from the Sun,” “Married with Children,” “Weeds,” “Two and a Half Men” for 10 seasons, and the final season of “The L Word.”

Lynch also has starred in films such as “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Role Models.”

She made her Broadway debut in 2013 in the role of Miss Hannigan in “Annie.”

She currently is featured in Netflix’s new Christopher Guest mockumentary “Mascots,” and is hosting “Hollywood Game Night” on NBC.
