CHAPIN, S.C. — Authorities say no charges will be filed in the crash of two boats on Lake Murray that killed two people last month.
The Department of Natural Resources said in a news release that 37-year-old Mark Daniel Phillips was driving an 18-foot bass boat and didn’t give way to Bruce Dyer’s 32-foot center console boat.
Wildlife officials say Dyer swerved so hard to try to avoid the collision that his wife and another passenger fell overboard.
Everyone on Dyer’s boat survived. Phillips and a passenger on his boat, 28-year-old Christopher Lanier, died. A third passenger survived.
Authorities say Dyer gave investigators the GPS on his boat, and they determined he was not going too fast or operating the vessel erratically.
The wreck happened at 11 p.m. April 21 near Dreher Island.
