SALEM, Ore. — An Oregon driver has been sentenced to more than six years in prison after pleading guilty to a drunken-driving crash that killed a woman checking her mail.

The Statesman Journal reports ( ) 44-year-old Vanessa Gienapp of Salem left the roadway on the morning of March 16. She struck Sandra Hill, a 72-year-old woman who had gone outside to get her mail.

The mailwoman witnessed the crash that knocked Hill and her mailbox to the ground. The carrier spotted Gienapp beginning to drive away and used her delivery vehicle to block the road until police arrived.

Hill died from her injuries in early April.

Gienapp was initially charged with DUI and assault. When Hill died, the assault charge was upgraded to manslaughter.
