LEXINGTON, S.C. — Prosecutors say a 24-year-old man will spend the next half of his life in prison for shooting and killing his roommate through a closed door after being punched in the mouth.

Solicitor S.R. Hubbard III said in a news release that Jeremy Head pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the October 2015 killing and was sentenced to 24 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Head argued with 23-year-old Alex Cano at the West Columbia home they shared. It ended with Cano hitting Head in the mouth, then walking out of the room and shutting the door behind him.

Head admitted grabbing an automatic rifle and firing several shots through the closed door. Police would find Cano dead in the kitchen from several gunshot wounds.

Head will serve the entire 24-year sentence.
