BALTIMORE — The head of Baltimore city schools is proposing to lay off up to 300 people due to budget woes.
Local news media outlets report that Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Sonja Santelises on Friday released her budget proposal for the fiscal year beginning July 1. It will now be considered by the city school board.
School officials say most of the layoffs would impact staff members who don’t work in the classroom. They say fewer than 75 would be teachers in core subjects like math and English.
Santelises had warned in January that 1,000 people could be laid off. The city and state then dedicated nearly $60 million to the school system to help fill the budget gap.
The school board is expected to vote later this month.
