ANDERSON, S.C. — Authorities say a 3-year-old South Carolina boy died after accidentally shooting himself with a gun he found in a vehicle near his home.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore says the boy died Friday after shooting himself near the community of Starr.

The Independent Mail reports (http://bit.ly/2rcR3X5 ) that the boy had been riding a lawnmower with his father before the shooting. Shore says the father was on the phone outside when he heard a shot come from the family’s sport utility vehicle.

Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride tells the newspaper it appears to have been an accident but it’s still under investigation.

It wasn’t clear if any charges are being considered. The sheriff’s office didn’t immediately respond to an email asking about the possibility of charges on Saturday.

The boy was taken to a hospital where he died Friday afternoon.
