CHICAGO — Authorities say two Chicago police officers were struck by shrapnel when another officer fired at a dog that charged at him.

Police say the dog ran at the officer on Monday evening in the city’s McKinley Park neighborhood on the South Side, prompting him to fire at the animal.

Police say one officer was hit in the leg and the other was hit in the foot. They were taken to hospitals in good condition. Authorities say the dog died.
