Columbus has the grooves: Live on the Plaza to feature urban dance troupe

An urban, freestyle dance troupe will perform at the fourth annual Live at the Plaza at the Bartholomew County Public Library Plaza.

The Columbus Area Arts Council is presenting the Groovaloos, a free event starting at 7 p.m. June 16, in partnership with the city of Columbus, according to organizers.

The Los Angeles-based group has performed on a range of national television shows, including “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” “Dancing With the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance.” The performers continue the arts council’s emphasis on the annual series’ spotlighting a creative entertainment genre or style not featured anywhere else in the area.

Classical/hip-hop musical duo Black Violin played at the first Live On the Plaza event in 2014. Music and circus-style performers MarchFourth! entertained in 2015 in a show that rain moved to the Central Middle School gym. And a cappella vocal group Naturally 7 performed last year on the plaza.

Rain location for this show is The Commons.

Arts council program director Tami Sharp said she is looking forward to seeing the Groovaloos.

“It is an opportunity to expose the community to this urban freestyle form of dance,” Sharp said. “Their high energy and powerful, synchronized movements will leave you either energized or completely exhausted.”

The Groovaloos consist of some of the most sought-after dancers in the industry, according to the troupe’s website at groovaloos.com. Members have toured with top artists such as Madonna, Pink, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Usher. Commercial credits range from iPod and T-Mobile to McDonald’s and Doritos.

Film credits include “Step Up 3D.”

Founder Bradley Rapier began inviting dancers to his Hollywood rooftop apartment in 1995 to dance, eat and fellowship. Those sessions expanded to the now-popular Groove Nights in North Hollywood. They are open gatherings in which outside dancers are welcomed and encouraged to dance.
