NEW YORK — A woman is dead after being hit by a garbage truck while crossing a street in New York City.

Police say the woman was struck and pulled under the wheels of the truck around midnight Tuesday while crossing a street in Greenwich Village. Officials say she was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died.

A witness tells the Daily News (http://nydn.us/2qrnpPR ) that she heard and saw the woman go under the truck’s wheels. Another witness, Dex Sexton, says there was a lot of blood on the sidewalk after the collision.

Witnesses say the distraught truck driver remained on the scene as police investigated.
