LAKELAND, Fla. — Authorities say an elderly man was found dead after a truck crashed and sunk into a central Florida creek.

The Ledger (https://goo.gl/Tz2nQt ) reports that 86-year-old Charles Custer’s body was recovered several hours after the Wednesday afternoon crash.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy and two firefighters who initially responded to the Saddle Creek crash site dove in after the man but were unable to find him. Dive and marine teams eventually retrieved the pickup. Custer was the only occupant.

Firefighters estimated the water to be more than 20 feet deep.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
