CAMPBELL, N.Y. — State police say a trooper is in critical condition after his patrol car was hit by another vehicle along a western New York highway.
Police say Trooper Craig Foglia had pulled over a westbound vehicle on Interstate 86 in the Steuben County town of Campbell around 5 p.m. Wednesday and was sitting inside his car when it from behind by a pickup truck.
The 13-year veteran was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where state police officials said during a news conference Thursday afternoon that Foglia was in critical condition after undergoing surgery.
The collision demolished the rear of the trooper car, which then hit the vehicle Foglia had stopped. Two people in that vehicle weren’t injured.
A 78-year-old New Jersey man driving the pickup suffered on-life-threatening injuries.
Both sides of I-86 were closed for more than two hours after the crash.
