ROARING SPRING, Pa. — The Pennsylvania police sergeant who is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from his department to feed a gambling habit has waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

The Altoona Mirror reports ( ) that Altoona Sgt. Matthew Starr waived the hearing Wednesday, meaning he must now stand trial or work out a plea agreement.. Starr was released from Somerset County jail after prosecutors agreed to reduce the cash bail to an unsecured bond.

State police say Starr’s schemes included collecting $9,000 in overtime he never completed along with other crimes.

Investigators say Starr lost more than $100,000 at casinos in Maryland and Pennsylvania between July 2014 and March 2017.

A formal arraignment is scheduled for June 23.
