The Columbus Police Department SWAT team and crisis negotiators were able to convince an armed Columbus man to surrender after nearly two hours.
Columbus police initially responded to a 3 p.m. Saturday report of a naked man shooting a shotgun in the 2900 block of Bayberry Drive at the Candlelight Mobile Home Park, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
A short time later, officers noticed a large hole that appeared to be from a shotgun blast on the side of the suspect’s mobile home, Harris said. It appeared that the gun was fired from inside the mobile home and also damaged a neighboring home, he said.
The Columbus Police Department SWAT Team and crisis negotiators were activated and arrived at the mobile home park a short time later, Harris said.
The negotiators were able to make contact with the suspect, David A. Valentine, 22, of Columbus, who exited his home and was taken into custody without further incident shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday.
Valentine was being transported to the Bartholomew County Jail with a 48-hour hold on a preliminary charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
