Welfare check leads to drug arrest

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Hope man after finding him asleep in his vehicle.

Deputy Dane Duke was sent to the 700 block of Jonesville Road at 12:21 a.m. Thursday to check on the welfare of Shawn S. Sanford, 40, of 171 Schaefer Drive, Hope, deputies said.

While checking Sanford, Duke learned Sanford was wanted on an out-of-county arrest warrant, deputies said. Duke found several syringes and a digital scale in Sanford’s vehicle, deputies said.

A plastic bag with a crystal substance, believed to be methamphetamine, and a plastic bag containing a green leafy substance, believed to be marijuana, were also found on Sanford, deputies said.

Sanford is being held without bond in the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of a legend drug-injection device, trafficking with an inmate, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and a Jennings County warrant, deputies said.
