Columbus swimmers place 7th in nationals

Columbus native Michael Brinegar finished seventh in the USA Swimming open water nationals 5K in 57 minutes, 38.02 seconds.

Rachel Sabotin, a Columbus resident and Trinity Lutheran freshman swimming for Club Olympia, finished seventh in her first Junior Nationals open water 5K in 1:07.56.

Both events were conducted on Castaic Lake just outside Santa Clarita, California.

Brinegar also competed in the 10K. He was swimming with the leaders through the first three of the six laps but became caught in traffic, and an official ruled he missed a buoy. After swimming about an extra 400 meters to go back around the buoy, he finished 22nd in 2:07.12.

Athletes from Donner compete in Bloomington

Four Donner Swim Club athletes competed in the open division of the IU visitbloomington.com Invitational.

Darby Coles placed fifth in the 400-meter freestyle. She also finished eighth in the 200 backstroke, ninth in the 100 backstroke, seventh in the 50 freestyle, 11th in the 100 freestyle and 50 backstroke, 24th in the 50 breaststroke and 26th in the 50 butterfly.

Jared Carroll finished sixth in the 200 backstroke, 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. He also was ninth in the 100 backstroke, 12th in the 400 freestyle and 14th in the 100 freestyle.

Sam Russell finished sixth in the 200 individual medley and 200 breaststroke. He also took 12th in the 50 breaststroke, 14th in the 50 butterfly and 50 backstroke and 18th in the 50 freestyle.

Evan Patterson finished eighth in the 200 butterfly and 50 freestyle. He also was ninth in the 100 butterfly, 10th in the 100 freestyle, 15th in the 50 butterfly, 16th in the 50 breaststroke and 20th in the 50 backstroke.
