BISMARCK, N.D. — A 22-year-old Fort Yates woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for pouring scalding water on a child.

Federal prosecutors say Shayla Left Hand was angry because the 4-year-old boy had messed his pants. The boy suffered third-degree burns, along with malnutrition and physical abuse.

The Bismarck Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2qO2TFs ) that Left Hand pleaded guilty in February to child abuse and neglect charges. She was sentenced this week to prison and ordered to pay $72,305 in restitution to the state Department of Human Services.

Another defendant in the case, Calvin Crow Eagle, is scheduled for sentencing on June 19 for child neglect.
