Parks close more of the People Trail for construction

Another section of the Columbus People Trail — this time north of the intersection of 25th Street and National Road — has been temporarily closed.

As of Wednesday, 10 blocks have been declared off-limits for walkers, runners and bicyclists. The closure now stretches from 30th Street to the north and the lower end of Lincoln Park to the south, said Casey Ritz, Columbus Parks and Recreation Department director of park operations.

The expanded area being closed is necessary to allow workers to prepare to assemble the historic Newbern Bridge over Haw Creek a few blocks south of 25th Street.

In early 2015, the bridge was removed from along County Road 850E in Newbern and replaced with a bridge completed last year.

The 106-year-old structure was disassembled before all parts were moved into a fenced storage area in Lincoln Park.

With 80 percent of the project federally funded, the $800,000-plus trail extension is expected to open in late September or October, Ritz said.
