DENVER — A suburban Denver man who shot a doctor to death and wounded two women, including his wife, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

The Denver Post reports Kevin Lyons was sentenced Monday for the April 2016 shooting that killed Dr. Kenneth Atkinson. Lyons pleaded guilty to 16 counts, including first-degree murder.

Prosecutors say he opened fire in his Centennial neighborhood, killing Atkinson as the physician ran out of his home to help two wounded women, including Lyons’ wife. She told investigators he had been acting “weird” and saying “crazy stuff” for days before the shootings.

Defense attorney James Karbach says Lyons was having marital problems and was in a marijuana- and caffeine-fueled paranoid state at the time.

On top of his life sentence, Lyons received 352 years in prison.
