SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake City police officer has been charged with aggravated kidnapping and assault in a domestic violence case.
Charging documents filed Friday say 25-year-old Matthew Collins was in officer training when he pushed, hit and choked a woman several times in 2016.
Prosecutors say the woman told police Collins handcuffed her and left her on the ground for long periods of time and threatened her if she reported him.
Charging documents say Collins told investigators he handcuffed her to prevent her from hurting herself.
The woman reported the allegations in March.
An online police directory that was updated June 1 listed Collins as a Salt Lake police officer, but the department did not immediately return a message for comment.
His attorney Rebecca Skordas could not immediately be reached for comment.
